More than a building

The Energy Innovation Center is a hub, bringing together research centers and institutes in the materials-energy-information nexus. The organization of the building itself expresses Mizzou’s larger strategy: energy production cannot be separated from the materials, computing systems, infrastructure and policy required to make it dependable.

The AI Education, Research and Infrastructure (AERI) Center is the university’s hub for interdisciplinary and responsible AI, linking faculty and students across every college, with the computing and engineering core housed within the building. The Quantum Innovation Center will also be based here, one of only four academic IBM Quantum Innovation Centers in North America. The MU Materials Science and Engineering Institute will house the facility for Autonomous Discovery of Materials, bringing together scientists and engineers working on batteries, semiconductors and other materials for energy innovation. A full floor is dedicated to nuclear energy and materials, with radiological laboratories and dedicated fabrication and post-irradiation testing infrastructure. 

That work does not stand alone. The University of Missouri Research Reactor — at 10 MW, the most powerful university research reactor in the country — provides the irradiation and testing environment the building’s nuclear program depends on. The Center for Rural Energy Security, a partnership of the College of Arts and Science and College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, examines how energy policy and technology reach rural communities.
